Over the past few years I have donated paintings gratis, in some cases with a reserve to cover framing costs. The charities still get the bulk of the sale, it's the only way I can afford to help these days. Gone are the days of free framed watercolours. For large tournaments a painting, to be auctioned for charity, or gifted to a Main sponsor, is part of the deal.
In 2009, at the first Dubai World Championship, a guy came and chatted to me while I painted away by the 18th. That guy was Craig Collins. He told me he would pay for a painting but if i could give him a discount, he would make a profit at his auction, for his ' Childrens Christmas Wishlist Charity' He's a genuine person, he does care and works tirelessly to help children with cancer. At that time I gave him a few others too and ever since, that's how we work. He doesn't expect me to do it for nothing! Like most. I usually can't afford to but when I can, I throw in a couple of watercolours. No, this is a relationship that works because of the great respect for each other. I urge everyone that attends his events & auctions to give. He will use your money wisely, to get the right presents, at the right time, to the right people.
Children with cancer need to smile and these gifts really help. Well done Craig and your team.
